Certify Your Recovery Residence with Confidence in Illinois

In Illinois, certification for recovery residences is not mandatory. The Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) maintains a voluntary registry for these residences, encouraging them to register and seek national accreditation or certification. While not required, obtaining certification through the Illinois Association of Extended Care (IAEC), the state affiliate of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR), is highly recommended. Certification ensures that your residence meets nationally recognized standards for quality and safety, enhances credibility with referral agencies, and may improve access to funding opportunities. By choosing to certify, you demonstrate a strong commitment to supporting residents in their recovery journey.

What are the requirements in Illinois?

Registration with the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS):
All sober living homes and halfway houses are encouraged to register with the IDHS Division of Substance Use Prevention and Recovery (SUPR). This registration helps serve as a referral resource for individuals seeking transitional housing support and can enhance the credibility of your home. Registration also increases opportunities for collaboration with support services and funding eligibility.

Certification with the Illinois Association of Extended Care (IAEC):
Sober living homes and halfway houses are encouraged to obtain certification through the Illinois Association of Extended Care (IAEC), the state affiliate of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR). While certification is not legally required, it demonstrates your commitment to maintaining nationally recognized quality and safety standards. Certification enhances credibility with referral agencies, supports best practices for resident care, and may improve access to funding opportunities.

Licensure Considerations:
Unlike Recovery Homes, sober living homes and halfway houses that focus on providing transitional housing for re-entering citizens and maintaining a drug- and alcohol-free environment typically do not require licensure from IDHS. However, if your facility provides structured support services similar to a Recovery Home, you may need to obtain licensure.

Zoning Requirements in Chicago:
In the City of Chicago, establishing a sober living home or halfway house requires obtaining a Special Use Permit for a Transitional Shelter to comply with local zoning ordinances.
